More options for smokers who want to quit

The key to giving up smoking is planning and motivation, but the good news for smokers is that a new product has increased the range of options for those who want to quit smoking.

Quit Victoria Executive Director Todd Harper says today's Australian launch of Zyban (bupropian hydrochloride) is a welcome addition to the range of products available to help smokers quit.

'Zyban has added to the variety of support - such as the Quitline and nicotine replacement therapy - currently available to those who want to give up smoking.'

'Most smokers want to quit. In Victoria, Quit found that at least 75% of smokers have made at least one quit attempt, and up to 40% of smokers intend to quit in the short term.'

Mr Harper says it usually takes most smokers several attempts to succeed, and planning and motivation are key ingredients, no matter what method a smoker uses to quit.

Mr Harper says while willpower remains the critical element for successful quit attempts, Zyban has offered promising results in initial trials.

'It's important to remember this is not a 'miracle cure'; the treatment may be suitable to help some smokers to quit.'

'To be successful, smokers must want to quit, and we know that if smokers seek additional support such as the free advice offered through the Quitline their chances of quitting successfully are increased.'

Mr Harper says a majority of smokers choose to quit by going 'cold turkey' on their own.

'Different methods work for different people, but we'd certainly encourage anyone trying to quit to call the Quitline and seek the assistance of trained advisors.'

Quit Victoria will be operating a phone counselling service that will be available to Zyban users. This service is in addition to the Quitline, which is available to all smokers.
